There is one certainty about millennials: we are all shaken. We are shaken by the enormity of what we are facing. The world appears to be heading towards the reality described in every dystopian thriller; nukes, crime and hateful wrath of nature. Amidst all this, armed with meaningless papers and certification, we are all heading down the road. Over the years, this road has turned into a giant highway full of opportunities. These opportunities are unlike anything we have prepared for. Years of tears and toil rendered meaningless by the challenges of the real world.
And so we struggle, start fresh, learn new ways to be good enough. Every crossroad that we reach we search desperately for a signpost, for anything to tell us what to do next. Some of us are lucky, we get carried part of the way until we regain our strength. Some of us dust it off while others look for shortcuts. Most of us however, are left stranded; unclear of what went wrong and convinced, beyond doubt, that we have failed. We have not failed. We are merely lost and we are strong enough to find our way back.
Nobody said life would be easy. Life never was easy. Looking back I can see that the road was always littered with fallen boulders and broken branches. Every pothole along the way was filled with losses, regrets and broken dreams. But hidden among them were also little moments lit by warmer memories. A tender smile, a prickly moustache that tickled my face everytime I was kissed, and a tiny fist that gripped my finger like a lifeline.
In the darkness that was pressing down on me my footsteps may have faltered. But in the light that I have found, my stride now remains firm. That light has always been within me, for I am enough. I can push back my dark clouds and let the sunshine warm my face, for I am enough.
